Radon is a natural radioactive gas that comes from the decay of uranium in the soil under our homes. It can enter through cracks in the foundation and build up inside without us noticing. High levels of radon are linked to a higher risk of lung cancer, making it the second leading cause after smoking. It is estimated that radon causes thousands of lung cancer deaths annually. The most concerning aspect is that radon is nearly impossible to detect without testing, increasing its danger.

  • Radon mitigation works by reducing radon gas levels in a home or building to minimize health risks. Radon is a radioactive gas that can seep into buildings from the ground and accumulate to dangerous levels. The most common radon mitigation methods include:

    1. Sub-slab Depressurization (Active Soil Depressurization)

    • A pipe is installed through the foundation slab into the soil beneath.

    • A fan continuously draws radon gas from beneath the building and vents it outside, usually above the roofline.

    • This prevents radon from entering the indoor air.

    2. Sub-membrane Depressurization (For Crawl Spaces)

    • A heavy-duty plastic sheet is placed over the soil in a crawl space.

    • A vent pipe and fan system pull radon gas from under the sheet and vent it outside.

    3. Sump Pit Mitigation

    • If the home has a sump pump, a sealed cover is installed over the sump pit.

    • A pipe is connected to a radon mitigation system to pull radon gas from the pit and vent it outside.

    4. Ventilation and Sealing

    • Increasing ventilation in basements or crawl spaces can help dilute radon levels.

    • Sealing cracks in the foundation, walls, and floors reduces radon entry but is usually not sufficient as a standalone solution.

    5. Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV)

    • HRVs exchange indoor and outdoor air, improving ventilation and reducing radon levels.

    • This method works best in milder climates and is often used as a supplement to other mitigation techniques.

    6. Water Supply Mitigation (For Radon in Water)

    • If radon is present in well water, an aeration system or activated carbon filter can be used to remove radon before the water is used.

  • After installing a radon mitigation system, you should test your home at least every two years to ensure the system is working effectively. However, there are some specific situations where more frequent testing is recommended.
